چکیده

The main objective of this paper is to report on unsafe actions of motor vehicle drivers at railroadhighway grade crossings and drivers’ response to installation of a centerline barrier that prevented them from driving around the gates. A comparison of unsafe driver actions in the preand post-barrier periods provided an idea about the effectiveness of the barrier in reducing unsafe driver actions. In this study, the railroad grade crossing at “M” Street in the city of Fremont, Nebraska, was studied continuously for approximately four months with the help of a night vision camera and a digital video recorder. Motor vehicle driver actions were observed whenever the gates were down, and instances of unsafe actions (e.g., gate rushing, U-turns, etc.) noted. In an effort to reduce gate rushing and other unsafe behaviors, a rubber and plastic barrier along roadway centerline was installed in two phases. The first installation phase limited access to crossing the centerline, starting several feet from the crossing, while the second installation phase closed all access to crossing the centerline at the gates. The actions of motor vehicle drivers were monitored during all three periods, and comparisons were made using appropriate statistical tools. The results provide insights into the effectiveness of such barriers. The conclusion reached from this research is that installation of the barrier was successful in reducing unsafe driver actions at the studied railroad-highway grade crossing.

Safety Improvements at Highway-Railroad Crossing for Pedestrians and Bicyclists and the Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Centerline Curbing

The views and opinions of the authors [or agency] expressed herein do not necessarily state or reflect those of the U. S. Abstract The focus of the research reported herein was on assessing the long-term effectiveness of median barriers at highway-rail grade crossings (HRGCs), the impacts of barrier maintenance in resurrecting safety, and on exploring and assessing ways to improve pedestrian an...

Using hierarchical tree-based regression model to predict train-vehicle crashes at passive highway-rail grade crossings.

This paper applies a nonparametric statistical method, hierarchical tree-based regression (HTBR), to explore train-vehicle crash prediction and analysis at passive highway-rail grade crossings. Using the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) database, the research focuses on 27 years of train-vehicle accident history in the United States from 1980 through 2006. A cross-sectional statistical ana...

An Evaluation of Traffic Control Devices and Driver Distraction on Driver Behavior at Railway-highway Grade Crossings

The U.S. railroad system is made up of over 700 railroads operating on 140,000 miles of track, with more than 130,000 at-grade public railway-highway crossings, or intersections in which any part of a roadway intersects with railroad tracks. Safety at these railroad-highway grade crossings and the related traffic control devices used to communicate with drivers is of major concern. There are th...

An investigation of railroad-highway grade crossing consolidation rating in Iowa

Railroad-highway grade crossings present unique safety and operational challenges on both the rail and highway side. Consolidation of these crossings can be a valuable tool to improve safety, but is often a source of disagreement among interested parties. In order to better evaluate crossings to determine their suitability to be consolidated, a spreadsheet-based tool was developed to rank all p...

Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings A Look Forward

The Committee on Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings is concerned with the safety and other affected characteristics (including economic considerations, traffic flow and delay, and countermeasures) of both highway and rail traffic at points where they intersect at grade, including the proximate surrounding environment and rail transit facilities. This is a white paper on the state of the art and t...
